Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
